Choosing a garden seed for your needs can seem like a bit of a minefield due to the vast majority of them on the market. Depending on the overall goal, there are different options available to you.
With that in mind, I’ve compiled a list of the best garden seeds currently available after considerable testing by me. I have tested these product on both my own garden, as well as on friends houses when available to do so. This means that I am able to see if the same results can be repeated on multiple lawns.
A1 Lawn Pro Landscaping Grass Seed
A1 Lawn have a variety of different grass seeds in their product line up, however I’ve opted for the Pro Landscaping Grass Seed when I was using it for testing purposes.
What I really like about it is that it this can be used to patch up parts of a lawn that have been neglected over time. It is also great for overseeing a lawn after a season where it hasn’t been looked after properly and as such requires new grass to replace the dead grass that is there.
A stand out part of this though is the fact that it can be used to create a new lawn from scratch. I’ve used this on a friends new build house that had a small back garden full of soil. After a month, the applied grass seed was well on its way to becoming a high quality lawn.
This was at the start of Spring last year and by the time the summer came and the grass watered regularly, it was a thick and rich green lawn.
The smallest bag of A1 Lawn Pro will cover up to 140m2 which makes it ideal for making a brand new lawn by yourself. When compared to getting rolls of turf delivered, you would be making a massive saving by using A1 Lawn Pro instead. For the price and the results obtained from it, it’s highly recommended.

Pronto Seed Grass Seed
With a name like Pronto Seed, you’d be expecting the grass to grow extremely quickly. I’m glad to say that Pronto Seed really does live up to it’s name. I used this on a friends garden who is selling their house. They had a bit of a grave situation with a garden strimmer and ending up taking out a rather large chunk of grass from their lawn.
They knew that they were going to be getting the photos and visitors within the month and they wanted a fast acting and cheap grass seed. Having used this for other previously, I knew that Pronto Seed was up to the task.
Each time I’ve used it, I’ve always been happy with how easy it is to apply. After cutting the grass and raking out any dead grass that remained, it was as easy as sprinking the seeds onto the area of choice. After that, keeping it well watered with my hose was more than adequate to get fast growth. In terms of growth time, I’ve noticed results within the first 6-10 days each time I’ve used it. Thankfully, for my friends selling their house, by the time the photos were due to be taken, the patch of lawn had been fully replaced.
It’s not just for patch repair, though. It can also be used for creating new lawns.
What I really like about Pronto Seed is that it also comes in a variety of different sizes, depending on the size of lawn/repair you need. This means that for instances where you need a small repair done, it is very cost effective.
The quality of the grass that was grown was excellent, and you wouldn’t be able to tell that it was a section that had to be replaced due to a mishap. It was a lovely green and my friends were very happy with the finish from it.
For those that want to carry out small repairs and get incredibly fast results and don’t want to spend a fortune in the process, Pronto Seed is the way forward. The 1.4kg box was used for my friends, as well as for my own testing purposes which was enough to cover 84m2. At just under £15, this is also really good value for money.

Miracle-Gro Thick’R Lawn Seed, Fertiliser and Soil Improver
This is an interesting product from Miracle-Gro. They have quite a few different seed options available, as well as various lawn feed options too. With this product, it acts a feed for the seeds, as well as improving the soil around it, which is great for ongoing lawn care.
However, my curiosity got the better of me with this and I decided to use it on part of my garden that was looking a bit threadbare and compare it to the other two seeds on this list.
I was really happy with the overall quality of this product and the results were very comparable to other two seeds mentioned on this list.
The seed was fast acting. I had noticed the results in just over two weeks, which is reasonable. However, the roots were very strong after this, so overall I was really impressed.
With respect to the feeding aspect of the product, Miracle-Gro give the timeline of you not needing to feed the grass for 3 months after this has been applied. This is actually a great time saver.
It should be noted though that this is not suitable for creating brand new lawns or for large patch repairs. Instead, this is designed for overseeding lawns that are looking a bit thin and poorly.
It’s very easy to spread by hand or with a small scoop, with the recommended dosage being 50 grams per square metre. At that rate, this bag will be large enough to cover 80m2.
For those that are solely needing to spruce up a threadbare garden and want to feed the area as well, Thick’R from Miracle-Gro is a great option. It is also reasonably priced.
