Petrol lawnmowers are becoming ever more popular as the years have went by. This is for two main reasons. The first is that they are now a lot cheaper than they used to be, as well as becoming more reliable over all. The second is that they are also cordless, making them easier to manoeuvre and not having to worry about cutting a cord.

Below, you’ll find my favourite options for petrol lawnmowers.

Hyundai 196CC Petrol Lawnmower

I’ll start of with this beast of a petrol lawnmower. I’ll point out right away that this is more expensive compared to the others listed below. However, when you find out about the feature set you’ll soon know why.

Right off the bat, it can collect a lot of grass. It has a capacity of 70 litres which makes it ideal for those with huge gardens. It effectively means that you can cut for longer without having to stop and empty the grass box.

Tied to this is the fact that it also is able to mulch the cut grass as well. This means that any cut grass will be re-introduced back into the garden. The benefit of this is that the grass is given a natural feed. It also means that you don’t need to dispose of as much grass at the end of the cut.

Another bonus with the Hyundai is that is a self propelled petrol lawnmower. This means that you don’t need to push it along the grass, it’ll move on it’s own accord. Instead, all you need to do is point it in the direction that it needs to go in. I found it very easy to use in the garden, and controlling the movement of it is as simple as using the controls on the hand rail.

One reservation that a lot of people have is the fact that some petrol lawnmowers can be really difficult to start. That isn’t the case with the Hyundai; there are two ways to start it. It can be done by pulling on the cord, or if you prefer, it can be done using the electric push start button.

Thanks to it being larger, it means you can quick the grass a lot quicker. It has a cutting width of 51cm, so it really is suited for medium and large gardens. In addition to this, I like that there are 6 increments for the cutting height. This means that you can safely cut the grass without taking off too much from the top.

It’s a considered purchase, but it’s a fantastic petrol lawnmower and one of the best I’ve used. It not only made the grass cutting extremely easy, but the quality of the cut was also fantastic. This is a product that is going to last a long time and will give you an excellent finish, time after time.

Murray EQ2-500 Petrol Lawnmower

The Murray EQ2-500 isn’t as costly as the Hyundai listed above, but that doesn’t mean it is any less impressive. However, there are some concessions.

The first is the cutting width. As opposed to the cutting width of 51cm on the Hyundai, the Murray EQ2-500 has a cutting width of 46cm. It’s not a huge difference, but it will impact the amount of grass you can cut in the same period of time.

Another difference is the fact that instead of a 70l grass box, the Murray EQ2-500 had a 50l grass box. Again, this is going to impact how much grass you can cut within the same timeframe.

However, it should be noted that there is also a mulching feature on the Murray, so you can use this to your advantage and limit the number of times you need to empty the grass box.

These are very minor differences, and it is in no way a bad thing, but they do result in a difference of roughly £100 between the units. The prices do change a lot for both models so a more precise difference can’t be given.

In terms of features, the EQ2-500 is a self propelled unit as well. It is really easy to move around the garden, and not cumbersome at all.

The engine that powers it is from the good people at Briggs & Stratton. They make a variety of different engines that many manufacturers use in their petrol lawnmowers. It has a lot of power behind it, and it also gives an amazing cut time after time.

The good news is that regardless of the length of the grass, you’ll be able to cut it with ease. It has 6 different height levels. The lowest height is 25mm and the highest is 75mm. I found it really easy to change the position on the fly.

The entire lawnmower feels extremely well built, and thanks to the steel construction of the unit, it means that any debris in the grass hitting off of the unit will not damage it. The steel will also help against long term corrosion.

For those that have big gardens, but don’t want to extend to the price of the Hyundai, the Murray EQ2-500 is an amazing choice. I was happy with every cut it provided.
