Choosing the best fence paint for your garden may not seem like a big deal, but the fence is a key feature of any garden. When it starts to bleach with the sun, it can look really unsightly. The good news is that applying a high quality paint to it will often make it look as good as new, meaning that you don’t need to replace it.
With that in mind, I have tried several fence paints on the market to give you an idea of what one’s you should consider when it comes to painting your own garden fences. Of course, when painting a fence, the finish will be greatly improved by using a high quality paint brush.
Cuprinol Ducksback Fence Paint
Cuprinol have various fence paints on the market, with Ducksback being one of their more popular offerings. It should be noted that Ducksback is only suitable for rough sawn wood. If your fence is smooth to the touch, then you cannot use Ducksback. The reason for this is that the composition of the paint is designed to stick to the rough sawn wood.
There are a lot of things that I like about the Ducksback line of paints. The first is that there are a variety of colours to choose from. They are all excellent colours and they really are a great way for you to add your own personal stamp on your garden.
For me (and many others), a paint that is easy to apply is a must. That is certainly the case with the Ducksback. It is one of the easiest fence paints that I have ever used, and I’ve used a lot over the years!
The paint went on smoothly and didn’t have any runs in it. The trick is of course to use a high quality brush and take your time doing it. One of the really great features of Ducksback is that it also protects the wood, giving it a water repllent finish. This is very similar to the finish you can get on a car after it has been waxed.
It is recommended that two coats of Ducksback is applied. The second coat can be applied as early as 5 hours after the first, but must be done within a maximum of 48 hours. Having said that, it is rainproof within an hour, so if it does rain after that time, you will be fine. When two coats have been applied, it will give you 5 years of protection on the wood.
It is also modestly priced as well when compared to others on the market. When you factor in that it also has 5 year protection, it is something that should be considered. After all, fences are extremely expensive, so it’s a sensible move to protect the investment.

Cuprinol Shades
Another offering from Cuprinol, and the good news is that this can be used on both rough sawn wood and also smooth wood. The benefit of this is that is you have both kinds of wood in your garden, you will be able to paint all the wood in the same colour.
Much like Ducksback, the quality of the colours on offer is second to none. There are so many to choose from, from subtle shades to more outlandish ones. Regardless of the colour that is chosen, it will look uniform throughout. This is thanks to the quality of the paint which allows it to be so easily applied to the wood.
In terms of application, I tested Shades using both a high quality paint brush, as well as a paint sprayer. Using both forms of application resulted in a flawless finish. I was really happy with how well the fence looked after painting it.
One downside is that the tins come in a maximum size of 2.5 litres. Due to this, for larger fences, it can cost quite bit of money to paint it all. Added to this is the fact that I would always recommend that a fence gets two coats of paint. However, due to the wide range of colours that no other brand is offering, I would say that it is definitely worth it.
For this paint, Curpinol also give a weather protection timespan of 6 years which is very impressive.
- Beautiful matt colour which enhances the grain of natural wood, with 6 year weather protection on wood.

Ronseal Fence Life Plus Paint
Ronseal have been in the paint game for years, and it’s a name that a lot of people know and love. Much like Cuprinol, they offer many different kinds of paint, but the one I like the most is their Fence Life Plus range.
There’s a few reasons for this. The first is that they do offer a large range of colours. Whilst they’re not as in depth as the Shades listed above, there is still a good level of variety present.
The second is the cost of the paint. The colour of the paint does dictate the price, but all of the colours in the range can be found for less than £20 for 5 litres. This is nothing short of exceptional.
It flows easily from the brush onto the wood, and didn’t feel like a cheap, watered down paint. The coverage on it was excellent, and I was very impressed with the overall result after the paint had fully dried. Ronseal give a 5 year wood protection rating with this, and given their high quality products, I’ve got no reason to doubt this.
What I also really liked about it is that at this price point for such a large tin, it can be used on both rough sawn wood as well as smooth wood. Regardless of the type of wood used during my testing, I found it to be really high quality, and it has looked great for the past few months.
If you want a high quality paint on a budget, then the Ronseal Fence Life Plus ticks that box as well.
