There are quite a few different ways to clean windows, all of which have their pros and cons. However, once you’ve found a method that you like, it’s always a good idea to stick with it. The reason for this is that once you’re happy with a method, you’re more likely to carry on cleaning the windows, as opposed to paying someone else to do it.
Water and Vinegar
The old tried and tested method for cleaning windows is to use a bucket of water with a small amount of vinegar in it.
There’s quite a few reasons why this works so well. The first is that it’s incredibly cheap to do it. A bottle of vinegar can be had for as little as 50p. Since only a small amount of vinegar is needed in the bottle, a little really does go a long way.
When I’m carrying out the water and vinegar method, I like to use lukewarm water.
Some of the old diehards will also use newspaper to wash the windows, but I’ve never been a fan of that. Instead, I will either use two microfibre towels (one to clean the windows and one to dry them), or use kitchen towel instead.
Regardless, water and vinegar always gives a squeaky clean finish. Depending on how dirty the glass is, it might end up taking several washes in order to leave a perfect finish. However, for windows that are well maintained, this is a great, cost effective option.

Using a Dedicated Glass Cleaner
There are a lot of glass cleaners available, some of them performing better than others.
In my rigorous testing, I have found that one of the best glass cleaners is the spray bottle of Invisible Glass. On the back of the bottle, it does recommend that kitchen towel isn’t used since it can cause streaking. I have personally tried this with various brands of kitchen towel and can confirm that with each brand, it did cause streaking.
When I’m using Invisible Glass, I use it in conjunction with two microfibre cloths. On the first cloth, I spray a small amount of the product onto it, as well as onto the glass that is to be cleaned. I quickly work it over the surface of the glass to remove any dirt and debris that is on it.
The Invisible Glass makes quick work of dirty glass. I then use the second, dry microfibre cloth to buff over the glass and leave a streak free finish. The Invisible Glass is a tad expensive, however, it can also be used to clean chrome. The fact that it’s so quick makes up for the cost of it.

Using a Steam Mop
If you have a steam mop, you might be surprised to know that it can also be used to clean glass if it has a handheld attachment on it. The pad that comes with the mop is a great way to clean windows, and some even have a squeegee on it as well to help dry it off.
However, I would strongly recommend that the lowest temperature is used on the windows. The reason for this is that the hot steam may end up causing damage to window frames.
If in doubt, don’t use this method. It can also be used to clean the glass on shower doors.
Using A Window Vac
Window vacs are a great tool which can really speed up the window cleaning time. Some come with just the vac on it’s own, but the majority of the new ones also come with a cleaning bottle, too.
I’ve found that these can give a great, deep clean on a window, without having to use a dedicate cleaner such as Invisible Glass. The trade off though is that this method is a bit more expensive.
The upside though is that for those may have joint issues and don’t want to carry out a lot of buffing when using either the water & vinegar method or the glass cleaner method, the window vac option is the much better choice.
