Karcher make a lot of different window vacs at various price points. In this review, I’ll be looking at the WV 5 Plus N and give you my indepth thoughts about it. It’s important to point out that there is an older model just called the WV 5 Plus. This review is for the newer, N, variant.
What’s in the box
Included in the box is the window vac itself, as well as a charger. In addition to this, there is an additional, smaller suction head (more on this below). There is also a spray bottle included with a microfibre head attachment. It comes in a well packed box and everything that is included in it will be used. Nothing has been included in the box just for the sake of it.
Ergonomics
Let’s start with the detergent bottle first. As someone with rather large hands, it can be really tough sometimes getting a bottle that feels really good to hold. The detergent bottle isn’t too weighty and it isn’t cumbersome to use either.
Similarly, the window vac itself is a good weight in the hand. It’s not too heavy, or too light. Even when the reservoir to collect the water is full, at no point did it feel unwieldy. I have suffered on and off with elbow and wrist issues, but using the WV 5 Plus N didn’t ever cause any flare up of these issues.
Results
In terms of cleaning, Karcher to offer a window cleaning solution. However, in the product manual it does say that you can use conventional window cleaning products, as long as there aren’t any spirits in it (such as white spirit) or detergents that will foam up excessively. Personally, I like to use a small amount of vinegar in the detergent bottle and top it up with lukewarm water when using this window vac. The microfiber cleaning pad really does help to make short work of any grime that is on the window. You can apply it liberally onto the glass.
In terms of the suction power of the WV 5 Plus N, every time I used it, it left a streak free finish. It really did look flawless. It really doesn’t take that long to clean the windows either. What I really liked about it was that for the smaller windows that I have on my front door, there is a smaller suction attachment in the box. This meant that I could quickly clean the window using the WV 5 Plus N using that attachment.
One area that I had overlooked before buying it was that it can be used to dry off shower doors after a shower. I normally rinse down the doors just before I get out the shower. Having this on hand afterwards is a great way to prevent water spots on your shower door.
Battery life
Karcher give an advertised battery life of 35 minutes, and I would actually agree with that. It’s one of those times that there’s not much deviation from the manufacturers guidelines since there’s only one power setting on the device.
One of the deal breakers for some though is that it is just over 3 hours to get a fully charge out of the unit. Personally, that didn’t bother me at all. The reason for that is that whilst it may seem like there is only 35 minutes of run time, this is quite substantial.
I am able to clean a 4 bedroom house (including patio doors) and dry them with the WV 5 Plus N within 15 minutes. This is with a flawless clean as well.
I didn’t notice any battery drain either in between cleans, so really you could clean the windows twice in your house on a single charge.
Since it is a rechargeble battery, there is of course the concern that over time the battery life would degrade. Thankfully, Karcher do offer a replacement battery should you need to do so.
Value for Money
I would say that the WV5 Plus N is exceptional value for money thanks to how well it works and how good it feels in the hand. There is an optional extra to purchase a charging station. This means that you can just drop the WV5 Plus N into the charger station instead of having to plug it into a charger each time. Personally, I wouldn’t say that the additional spend for the charging station was worth it. It’s definitely something that you can do without.
Also, you need to consider as well how much a window cleaner would take to do all the windows in your house. Where I stay, they take £15 for a house. They use the same bucket of water for 5 houses at a time before replacing the water. For those in the street that get their windows “cleaned”, they come every fortnight. That works out at £390 per year. For that on it’s own, the WV 5 Plus N is leaps and bounds better value for money.
