Choosing a carpet and upholstery cleaner can be a really challenging task, thanks to there being so many of them available online. To make things easier for you, I have complied a list of my two favourite carpet cleaners.
This should give you enough information to make an informed decision on which carpet cleaner you should by. Buying any of these is much cheaper than renting a Rug Doctor from your local supermarket, especially since you can use them time and again. These have been tested over several months in different settings. They have also been all tested on the same cut of cream carpet which had muddy footprints in it.
Bissell Pro Heat 2X Revolution
Bissell is well known brand when it comes to carpet cleaners and extractors. I have been using this model for 5 years, and I’m always impressed about how well it still works after all this time.
When I unboxed it many years ago, I was a bit nervous about the size of it and how well I could move it around. However, it’s quite light and moving it around (with a full tank of clean water) was very easy.
In terms of tank size, it can hold 3.7 litres of water which is quite a lot when it comes to carpet cleaning. There are also bottles of cleaning solution included, so you can test how well it works (Bissell offers several different kinds) before taking the plunge and buying a bottle.
The bristles on the cleaner are very gentle but at the same time powerful. In the carpet cleaning test mentioned above, it cleaned the carpet the quickest out of the units used in this test. Not only that, it also dried the fastest as well. Once it was fully dried, the carpet felt great and as good as new.
I also really liked how well the mini suction tool worked on the unit. Sometimes they can be a bit hit or miss but with the ProHeat 2X, the power from the handheld suction tool was phenomenal. I used it on a car seat that had chocolate on it (notoriously difficult to get out). First I sprayed a small amount of Autoglym Interior Shampoo on it, let it bed in for a few minutes and then sprayed and extracted the full seat with the tool. Not only was the stain completely gone, but the whole seat looked amazing.
It also made cleaning carpets on the stairs a real breeze. I used the express clean on them and it was dry within the hour.
It’s the most expensive carpet cleaner on this list, but in my opinion, having had tested it for so many years, it is the best carpet cleaner on the market.

Vax Rapid Power Carpet Cleaner
In terms of carpet and upholstery cleaning, one of the oldest names in the business is Vax. When I was a child I remember my parents have a dual action cleaner from Vax; it would function as a vacuum cleaner, but it could also convert into a carpet cleaner.
Some 30 years later and Vax are just as popular now as they were back then, and there’s a reason why this carpet cleaner in particular has nearly 3,000 5 star reviews.
When using this on carpets of varying qualities, I was really impressed on how well each of them looked after they were cleaned.
It has a really impressive sized tank, with it holding 4.7 litres of water meaning that you can use the cleaner for quite some time before you need to top it up. As you would expect, any dirty water that is collected goes into a separate tank, meaning that there is no worry of cross contamination.
In terms of modes, there is a quick clean and also a deep clean function on it. Regardless of which mode you choose, it’ll leave the area spotless.
I really like that when using the quick mode, the cleaned area is dry within 1 hour.
In the test on the cream carpet, the Vax Rapid cleaned it the second fastest and left it feeling brand new thanks to the included cleaning solution. In addition to this, there is also a spot tool which is great for cleaning stairs and also removing stains from upholstery. It could also be used to clean the cloth seats on your car.
The Vax Rapid really does live up to its name and for those that can’t stretch their budget to the Bissell, this is a worthy alternative.
